Virginia “Ginger” was born in Petoskey, Michigan, on July 31, 1945, while the family was on vacation. She lived in Perrysburg her entire life. She attended and graduated from Maumee Valley Country Day School. She was a ballet dancer, cheerleader and played field hockey. She attended one year at Pine Manor College, but when her father passed away she came back home and completed her education at the University of Toledo with a bachelor’s in political science. While she was in college, she joined the Chi Omega sorority. After college, she joined the Toledo Chapter of the Junior League. She met her husband at a beach party while at her summer house.
She worked a year at Genoa High School teaching Spanish. She then enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom until her children, Marshall and Molly, were old enough to attend grade school. She volunteered at the neonatal department at Toledo Hospital. Her daughter was in that department for many months, she understood what the parents were going through and she wanted to let the families know that they were not alone. Then she found employment at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. She started as a secretary and moved up to pastoral assistant. While there, she led the junior and senior high youth groups, started a women’s spirituality group called “Women on the Journey.” She became active in the youth ministries at the diocesan level of the Episcopal Church. She helped with the planning and leading the conferences and conventions. She ran a yearly rummage sale, set up a work camp for the youth group in the Appalachian Mountains, and learned about the coal mines. She loved helping with the senior tea. Later in life she enjoyed volunteering at the Clothesline Ministry at St. Timothy’s Church.
Visitation for Virginia “Ginger” will be held on Friday, February 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary Street, Perrysburg. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 21, at 11 a.m., at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 871 East Boundary Street, Perrysburg.
