William “Bill” L. Black, 87, of Perrysburg, peacefully passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born in 1938 in Tiffin, a son of Hestor and Dorothy Black. He was a graduate of Calvert Catholic
High School, and northwest Ohio remained home for the whole of his life–Tiffin first, then Napoleon and finally Perrysburg. He was previously married to Barbara Fretenburg.
He worked as shipping and receiving manager at Fulton Tubing before going on to hold several other jobs that kept him engaged with the public. To Bill, no one was a stranger, and his family extended well beyond blood into a vast network of colleagues and friends.
Away from work, he was an avid collector and a meticulous record keeper. He had a strong competitive spirit and enjoyed fishing and golf, as well as played on bowling and softball leagues well into his later years. He was a lifelong fan of all Cleveland sports teams and worked for many years at Bowling Green State University athletic Π
sporting events. More casually, he could be found around the card table with groups of friends and family. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and of St. Rose Catholic Church in Perrysburg.
Bill is survived by his brother, Gary Black, and Gary’s wife, Sharon; by his four children, Shelley Pliska, Greg Black, Douglas Black and Jennifer Cook; and by his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, to be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or to the Knights of Columbus.
