Roy Frederick Lessing, age 97, of Perrysburg, passed away on April 25, 2023, two days after his birthday.

He was born in Bedford County, Michigan, on April 23, 1926, to Rudolf and Helene Lessing, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Lessing Judd.

Roy served in the U.S. Army Corps as a T/Sgt. in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II and in Tokyo under the command of Douglas Mac-Arthur.

For three years Roy was employed by the U.S. State Department at the American Consulate in Hanoi, Vietnam. After his tour of duty in Vietnam, he was employed by the Marathon Oil Company for 10 years in Findlay. Roy then went on to teach at Davis Business College. His final employment of 20 years has been with the Toledo Public Schools, teaching French and German.

After retirement, Roy went on to teach German at the Schwaben Vereine, of which he was a long-time member.

Roy also was a past member and officer of the Alliance Francaise de Toledo and a board member emeritus of the late Perrysburg Area Arts Council. Roy was a member of Zoar Lutheran

Church in Perrysburg, where he sang in the choir.

Roy’s most cherished possession was an honorary alumni award from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky.

Roy is survived by nieces, Shereth Lichtenwald, Linda (David) Meyerholtz; great-nieces, Kristin (Matthew) Johnson, Abbey (Robert) Farish, Cynthia Penka and Melissa (Patrick) Thomas; great-nephews, Judd and Cole Penka, George Thomas; great-niece, Annabelle Grace Thomas; nieces, Deborah Walton, Gretchen Lambert; nephew, Kurt Stahl, and of course, loved ones in Germany.

Burial will be by Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home in Maumee. A celebration of Roy’s life will be held on Saturday, August 5, at the clubhouse at Fallen Timbers Fairways, located on Stitt Road in Waterville, from 1 to 4 p.m. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com.
