“Tom” Solon, age 86, passed away June 7, 2025, at The Lakes of Monclova.
Tom was the son of James and Genevieve (Fitzgerald) Solon, born June 22, 1938, and was raised in Wilmette, Illinois.
He was a 1956 graduate of Loyola Academy and 1960 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a B.A. in economics. He later attended the Northwestern University Graduate School of Business.
He met Brenda Bokor, of Flint, Michigan, on a blind date while attending the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College. They married in 1962 and shared 59 years of marriage until Brenda’s passing on March 18, 2022. They lovingly raised three children.
Tom had a long career with Owens Corning from 1965-92. He served in many roles and divisions for the company; sales for home building products, marketing manager for manufactured housing, vice president and general manager for plumbing fixtures and retiring in 1992 as president and CEO of O/C tanks.
Tom was always a generous and charitable man, supporting many with his time and talents. He served on the Toledo Diocesan Cemetery Board, Toledo Central City Neighborhoods Board trustee and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation board of directors. He was an active volunteer for Mobile Meals of Toledo, Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Way Public Library.
Tom was a friend to anyone he met, always kind and welcoming. He had wonderful friendships and cherished many celebrations and travels with the Burnley Woods neighborhood gang, Loyola Academy buddies and Owens Corning comrades. “Tom Solon was a wonderful man, a faithful husband, terrific father, amazing boss and great friend. He was a fantastic Christian and was the personification of honor, empathy and truth.” ~Jud Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James, and wife, Brenda. He is survived by children, James Solon (Ottawa Hills), Mary (Brad) Thomas (Perrysburg), Caroline Kennedy (Maumee); grandchildren, Grace Smiley, Jude Kennedy, Olivia Thomas, Genevieve Thomas, and great-grandchildren, Calee Colburn and Faye Kennedy.
A Memorial Mass will be held on June 27, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Perrysburg. There will be a visitation in the atrium at 9 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Way Library Foundation and Friends or Central City Ministry of Toledo.
