Susan Kay (Challen) Eckel, age 77, of Perrysburg, passed away peacefully from multi-organ failure on June 24, 2025, at the University of Toledo Medical Center in Toledo.
Born on November 12, 1947, in Findlay, she was the daughter of the late Clement and Margaret (Street) Challen. Susan dedicated her life to serving others with compassion and care, both in her career and in her everyday life.
A proud graduate of Owens Community College of Nursing, Susan worked as a devoted nurse in many medical environments during the span of her 30-plus year career. She began as an RN at Flower Hospital, followed by several years in hemodialysis treatment and hospice, and finally, working in home health care. Known for her commitment to helping others, her care extended beyond the hospital, as she actively volunteered at her local food pantry and church.
Susan had a vibrant and loving personality. She was a gifted cook, an animal lover, a woman of deep faith and a Detroit Red Wings fan. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, her kind heart and the love and devotion she poured into her family and community.
She is survived by her sons, Corey (Whitehouse) and Ryan (Silverdale, Washington) Eckel; and her beloved grandchildren, Johnathan, Charlie (Silverdale) and Eden (Whitehouse). She also leaves behind her siblings, Shirley
Bates (Phoenix, Arizona), Betty (Ralph) Weilant (Perrysburg) and James (Tammy) Challen (Maumee). Susan was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Christina; her brothers, Darrel and Dennis Challen, and her brother-in-law, Robert Bates.
