Carleton “Tony” G. Broer Jr, 91, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2025, at Kingston of Perrysburg. Tony was bom September 22, 1933, in Perrysburg, to Carleton G. and Susanne (Close) Broer. Tony graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1952 and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served four years active duty and four years in the reserves.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Tony joined the family business, the Broer-Freeman Co., in Toledo. He studied gemology at the Gemological Institute of America and the American Gem Society. After his father’s passing in December 1975, Tony took over the Broer-Freeman Co. and expanded to several satellite stores in the Toledo area. Tony also became very involved in both the American Gem Society and the Gemological Institute of America. He served on the board of governors of the Gemological Institute of America from 1976-96 and as chairman of the board of governors from 1986-91.
Tony sold the business and retired in 1995, and kept busy taking care of his home and yard, enjoying his vintage Corvette, putting miles on his Harley motorcycle and flying his airplane.
Tony is survived by his daughters, Jeanine Vallejo and Patricia (Santiago) Hinojosa; son-in-law, James Davila; sisters, Carole and Linda, as well as a wonderful collection of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughters, Jill Davila and Carole Tye.
Friends and family were received Sunday, April 27, from noon to 3 p.m., at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, where funeral services were held Monday, April 28, at 11 a.m. Burial was private.
