On May 8, New Century Club gathered at Wolf’s Blooms and Berries in Bowling Green. Members were met by owner, Sue Wolf, who spoke on the history of the greenhouse. She explained how they started with one acre of strawberries and a road side stand. After trying many different varieties, they discovered the large and sweet Jewel strawberry. Due to demand they have expanded to 12 acres. The idea of flowers and plants came from a hanging basket in their yard that strawberry customers admired. So Jim and Mary Wolf decided also to try selling planters. This was also successful and they opened as a full retail greenhouse in April 1997. Today they employ a seasonal staff of about 30 people. Employees range in age from 15 to 92. All are hard working and are treated as family, Wolf said. Wolf’s Blooms and Berries product line has expanded to include tropicals, potted arrangements, herbs, pottery, garden decor and even custom planting and gardening classes. Many members expressed an interest in returning to the greenhouse for plants and strawberries. After the presentation, members met at Sunset Bistro for the general meeting and lunch.
