Katherine (Katy) Anne McPherson, age 60, passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at home, surrounded by her immediate family after a hard-fought battle with ALS. She was born on January 9, 1963, in Akron. Her parents are Gerald and Loujean Hazel of Perrysburg. Katy and her husband, Jay, raised two children together in Perrysburg. She also was known as a blessed Nana to her two granddaughters, who she loved dearly.
Katy graduated from Miami University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Upon graduation, Katy served as a probation officer for the Wood County Juvenile Court. She later became the chief probation officer at Maumee Municipal Court, where she simultaneously obtained her master’s degree in criminal justice from Tiffin University.
Katy will be remembered as a loving, accepting, loyal and caring person with a stubborn side that aided in her fight against ALS. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, starting but not finishing craft projects, camping, watching NASCAR alongside her husband, cheering on the Buckeyes, playing with her grandchildren, watching tennis and game shows, and giving treats to her loyal lab Maggie. Katy left an impact on many with her wit, intelligence and ability and willingness to help others. She will be missed by the lifelong high school and college friends with whom she shared many memories.
Katy is survived by her loving husband of 35 years Jay McPherson; children, Annie (Erica) Lipstraw and Ryan McPherson; grandchildren, Kamryn and Kinsley Lipstraw; parents, Gerald and Loujean Hazel, and sister, Elizabeth Hazel.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, October 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary Street, Perrysburg. A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 28, at 11 a.m., at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the ALS Foundation, Northern Ohio Chapter, 6133 Rockside Road #301, Independence, Ohio 44131.
