Richard S. Currie, 89, of Perrysburg, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022. He was born November 14, 1932, in Port Huron, Michigan, to Richard and Pearl (Shiel) Currie II. He married Doris Ahonen on October 31, 1959, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Richard attended high school in Port Huron. He went on to graduate from the University of Michigan, with a degree in industrial engineering, and later earned an MBA from Ball State University in Indiana.
He served as an L.T.J.G. in the U.S. Navy from 1956- 60, onboard the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) aircraft carrier. He met Doris while stationed in Alameda, California, and they were married over 62 years.
He was employed by companies including Westinghouse and Owens Illinois.
He was a long-time member of the Perrysburg First Presbyterian Church, Perrysburg Boat Club, Suburban Singers and Perrysburg Chorale. He sang in the church choir and served on the church leadership board. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and AARP, offering tax assistance at the Way Public Library for 20 years.
His other passion included cycling, clocking thousands of miles per year on the country roads of Wood County. He completed the annual, 200 mile MS Biketo-the-Bay ride 19 times. Richard was a strong advocate for the biking community, advocating bike lanes and other infrastructure improvements.
He was an active member of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments and the Slow Rollers bike group. He will be remembered for the many camping trips he took with his family, criss-crossing the country over the years.
He loved dogs, especially his Boston Terriers.
He enjoyed ice cream, fixing things around the home, refinishing antiques and being a helpful and friendly neighbor.
He is survived by his wife; children, Linda Currie (and Greg McCrea), Jeff Currie (and Liz Currie) and Beth Currie (daughter in-law). His grandchildren include Amelia McCrea, Cameron McCrea, Eric Currie, Nicholas Currie and Christopher Currie.
In addition to his parents, Richard and Pearl Currie, he was preceded in death by his son, Philip Currie; grandson, Evan Currie, and sister, Barbara Miller.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday May 14, at First Presbyterian Church, 200 East Second Street, Perrysburg.
