Hollis Warren Merrick III, M.D., 83, of Perrysburg, passed away June 8, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Hollis was born October 1, 1938, in Watertown, New York, to Hollis and Pearl (Scutt) Merrick II. Hollis did his undergraduate studies at Syracuse University, graduating in 1962, then earned his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Province du Québec, Canada. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. Hollis started his residency on July 1, 1967, at the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University in Montreal. In October of 1968, he met his future wife, Mary, who was also a resident at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He joined the faculty of McGill University on July 1, 1972, and married Mary Smith on July 12, 1975.
They moved to Perrysburg in September 1977, and he joined the faculty of the former MCO, now the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. He was devoted to teaching, research and clinical care during his 40 years on the fac ∏ulty. Hollis retired as a professor emeritus of surgery.
He loved boating, building beautiful model train layouts and reading military history. In his younger years, he enjoyed flying.
Hollis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary, and three beloved nieces and their families–Mrs. Stacy Innes, her husband, Frederick, and their daughters, Maryann, Avaline and Carolyn; Dr. Elizabeth Rhynold, her husband, Shannon, and their sons, David and Gavin, and Catherine Lowe, her husband, Christopher, and their son, Crawford. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends and family will be received Saturday, June 18, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, with funeral services beginning at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be private.
