Dolores (Cookie) Tefft Schoenhofer passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital on September 30, 2021, after a short illness.

Dolores was born to Lyle Ellsworth and Margaret (Fabian) Tefft. She attended St. Stephen’s Grade School. She graduated from Waite High School in 1952. She was always proud of her Hungarian roots, growing up in “Birmingham” in Toledo, Ohio. After high school, she loved to volunteer at St. Anthony’s Orphanage on Cherry Street.

She married Richard Schoenhofer in 1954 and they proudly welcomed six children into this world in quick succession.

Dolores, for most of her life, combined a full-time secretarial career with volunteer work for organizations such as Heartbeat of Toledo and Foundation for Life. She later became known as “the lady with the green pen,” addressing envelopes for her friend Jim Savage and his organization “Anonymous No More” for more than 20 years. Even in her later years, she could be found walking in front of the abortion clinic with “40 Days for Life” to protect the rights of unborn children.

Learning was a passion and she began college classes at age 33, graduating magna cum laude from Toledo University in 2000 at age 66. She was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.

Studying and deepening her Catholic faith also was a major priority and source of pride.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elizabeth (Tefft) Upton, and then by her husband of 62 years, Richard in 2016.

She is survived by her six children, Richard Jr., Linda Templeton, Debra Durica, Mary Schoenhofer, Laura (Robert) Schrock and Lisa Schoenhofer. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and many, many wonderful friends who were so kind and supportive of her.

Dolores donated her body to the UTMC Anatomical Research Department. A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, November 6, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Rose Catholic Church in Perrysburg. Her remains will be cremated at a later date.
