The O~Deer Diner Cruise-In takes place every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., at the corner of Louisiana and Indiana avenues.

That’s just across the street from the diner, on the Commodore Building lawn.

In addition to attracting car owners with all makes, models and ages of cars, the event features a 50/50 drawing.

Organizers and hosts Rick and Dana Ruffner donate all proceeds to the Perrysburg School District.

“Yes, 100 percent of the money raised from the drawing is donated to Perrysburg High School’s after-prom committee to ensure a fun, safe activity for the kids,” Mr. Ruffner explained.

He didn’t count the number of cars from last week’s Cruise-In–too busy, perhaps–but the event usually draws about 400 cars a week, unusual for a weekly car show, Mr. Ruffner said.

A couple of weeks ago, there were 600 cars, he said.

The Ruffners are grateful to local businesses such as Frickers, Perrysburgers, Kazmaier’s and 5th Street Pub, which donate gift cards to give away as door prizes.

“We’re so thankful for their support,” Mr. Ruffner said. “It’s just another fun aspect to the show. Not only is it completely free to register, there’s a chance to win a great prize to a local restaurant or store.”

The oldest car we saw was made in 1932. A Ford, we think. (Please, we’re not car historians, though we think there’s merit in knowing something about the history of car-making in the U.S., for sure–and maybe taking notes.)

It’s fascinating, and we are impressed with the ability of these car lovers to restore their vehicles and keep them in tiptop shape.

We also appreciate the camaraderie these folks share and their interest in answering questions from folks who, well, know next-to-nothing about cars.
