Middle school students at St. Rose Catholic School again this year participated in the “Trout in the Classroom” project.

Their work culminated recently with the release of the trout fry into Cold Creek at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources fish hatchery in Castalia.

The students meet once a week during the second semester to help raise the trout in the tank at school through the stages from eggs to fry. They also learn about cold water habitats, fly tying and fly casting.

Eighth-grader Kendra Geisbuhler and her mother traveled to Castalia on a cold, wet and windy day, along with St. Rose principal Dr. Bryon Borgelt and his family, to release the trout, shown at right.

“The students did a tremendous job taking care of the trout and monitoring the water conditions as they grew,” he explained. “It requires daily care and record keeping. This is the healthiest batch of trout we have had in the three years of the class.”
