State Senator Theresa Gavarone announced her candidacy for the Ninth Congressional District last week.

“After a lot thought and encouragement from my family and countless constituents, I have decided to seek the Republican nomination for Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District,” Mrs. Gavarone said. “For the past four decades, Marcy Kaptur has occupied this seat in Congress but has delivered nothing except runaway inflation driven by unprecedented government spending. Northwest and northern Ohio families need a representative who works for them, not for Nancy Pelosi and the radical left. I am running for Congress to deliver real, conservative results for families across the Ninth District.”

Mrs. Gavarone is currently the state senator for Ohio’s Second District which includes all or part of Wood, Erie, Fulton, Lucas and Ottawa counties. She also served as a state representative for the Third District and as a Bowling Green city councilwoman.

“During my time in elected office, we cut income taxes, balanced Ohio’s budget, expanded legal gun rights, protected life and much more,” Senator Gavarone said.

Mike Zickar, chair of Wood County Democrats, is “surprised to see that Senator Gavarone filed for the Ninth District when she lives in the Fifth District, and am disappointed to see that she listed her residence in Huron, Ohio, when, in fact, she doesn't live there. This is the kind of cynical political ploy that voters have become sick of.”

Defending Congresswoman Kaptur’s record, he added that “Congresswoman Kaptur has made it her career to fight for northwest Ohio. She has been willing to take on leaders, regardless of party, to make sure our region gets its due, whether it’s protecting Lake Erie, fighting for auto workers or making sure we invest in our infrastructure. Time and time again, Senator Gavarone has put party over her constituents.”

Senator Gavarone has been a resident of northern Ohio her entire adult life; she earned her undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and her law degree from the University of Toledo.

The primary election will be held May 3, 2022.
