The Perrysburg High School architecture class recently participated in the 2022 AIA High School Design Competition.

This year’s task was to design and create a Safe Splash Swim School to be located at the old French Quarter site.

Isaiah Matthews won first place in the Junior Architectural Competition.

With that award comes a $1,000 cash prize as well as a five-year renewable $10,000 scholarship totaling $50,000 each from the University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence Technological University. Isaiah also placed first in the AIA Toledo Emerging Professionals Material Innovation Competition ($100) and first place in the Toledo Collective Urban Design Competition ($150).

Andrew Boden placed third in the Freshman/Sophomore Competition, giving him a $100 cash prize and a five-year renewable $2,000 scholarship offered by the University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence Technological University.

Connor Roberts placed fifth in the Senior Architectural Competition, A.J. Bernthisel placed third in the EDGE Landscape Architectural Competition, and Hyunsuk Hwang placed second in the AIA Toledo Emerging Professional Material Innovation Competition.

“Year in and year out, these architecture students work hard to complete the numerous required drawings in a limited timeframe,” said Jeff Smith, technology eduction teacher at PHS. “I’m proud of their efforts.”

Mr. Smith and his students were appreciative of the weekly visits from architect Rick Butera.

“He unselfishly gives up his time to help students throughout this competition and promote the field of architecture,” said Mr. Smith.
