Joan Farmer Hankins, age 90, of Dublin, and formerly of Maumee, Perrysburg and Pemberville, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Dublin Retirement Village in Dublin. She was born on April 12, 1935, in New York. Joan married Bruce “Bruno” M. Hankins on June 12, 1958, in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Joan and Bruno raised two children and celebrated nearly 59 years of marriage together until Bruno’s death in April of 2017.

Joan is survived by daughter, Abigail H. (Daniel) Rogowski of Hilliard; grandchildren, Jasper and Cameron Hankins of Waihi Beach, New Zealand; Sommer and Kaitlyn Rogowski of Hilliard, and sister, Jeanne Moser of New York City. In addition to her husband, Bruno, Joan was preceded in death by her parents, John and Esther Farmer; son, Chip Hankins, and sister, Catherine Hosmer.

While working on her master’s degree at the University of Toledo in 1975, she designed and developed the Toledo Youth Soccer League, using the MVCDS soccer field for games. Joan felt that this was her finest accomplishment … introducing soccer to the children of northwest Ohio.

Born in Hastings on the Hudson, New York, where she attended elementary through high school, graduating in 1952; she received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1956. She taught third grade at Roaring Brook Elementary School, Chappaqua, New York, and physical education at Maumee Valley Country Day School, Toledo. She also taught kindergarten at the U.S. Army Base in Straubing, Germany, where her husband was stationed. Having raised their family in Maumee, and once Joan’s family was established, she returned to teaching phys. ed., at Maumee Valley Country Day School from 1963-78.

Joan was active in many community activities including several City of Maumee committees, the Maumee Chamber of Commerce (first female president 1985); the Junior League of Toledo; the board of the Lucas County American Cancer Society; St Paul’s Episcopal Church as president of the Helen Kreps Guild; the Women’s Club of Costa Rica; Otterbein Pemberville board of directors; instrumental in developing the Bowlus Life Enrichment Center while at Otterbein: and was a Hospice of Northwest Ohio volunteer. In addition, Joan was an active member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Perrysburg. She and her husband belonged to Laurel Hill Tennis Club, the Carranor Club in Perrysburg and Rockwell Springs Trout Club in Castalia.

Joan and Bruno spent many winter months in Costa Rica from 1987-2012. They both enjoyed traveling to many Central and South American countries to hunt and fish.

A Celebration of Life memorial will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, May 23, at Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 871 East Boundary Street, Perrysburg. The family will receive guests from 9:30 a.m., until time of service. Officiating will be Father Matthew Wahlgren. Joan will be laid to rest next to her husband at a family committal in Ft. Meigs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Summit Hospice of Columbus.
