Lewis “Tad” Maynard Owen passed from this earth on August 7, 2026, at his home in Perrysburg, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Toledo, to Lewis and Madeline Owen on May 4, 1939. He married Judith E. Bowles on February 13, 1965, and they enjoyed 61 years together, filled with faith, children, grandchildren, laughter and love. He was a wonderful father to Sarah, Emily and Lane.

Tad graduated from Rogers High School in 1957 and went directly into the U.S. Army, where he served in a Transportation Corps in Fort Greely, Alaska. Tad was very proud of his service, loved America and cried whenever he sang the National Anthem. After his years in the Army, he moved to California to attend Biola University. He fell in love with the ocean and MG convertibles, but returned to Ohio in 1963 to begin his career at DeVilbiss Company, where he met his future bride. Throughout his professional life, he worked in sales at Avery Label and retired from Hi-Tech Packaging.

He kept busy during retirement, filling his days supporting his grandchildren at school and sporting events. He was an amazing grandfather and left an indelible impression on his granddaughter and eight grandsons, as well as their friends.

His faith was a very important part of his life, and he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and active member of Boulevard Christian Church in Sylvania. His wonderful tenor voice made him a standout in the church choir and the old-time quartet. His favorite hymn was “It is Well,” and his family sang it to him as he passed.

Tad was an affectionate, outgoing man who was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Tad never met a stranger and loved being the life of the party.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judi, who faithfully cared for him during his battle with dementia. Left to cherish his memory are Sarah and Dave Gonia, Emily and Clark Conley, and Lane and Karen Owen. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy, are Adam and Kaitlin Gonia, Cole Gonia, Luke Gonia, Grace, Jim, George and Emily Farley, Evan, Gabby, Lewis and Sophia Conley, Carl and Jess Conley, Joseph Conley, Wolf and Rex Owen. To cherish his memory and carry on his legacy, another great-grandchild, Baby Gonia, is arriving in November. Tad had many special nieces and nephews, and they enjoyed wonderful annual beach trips to Kure Beach, North Carolina, with their families. He also is survived by his brother Steve (Alex) Owen.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lewis (Agnes) Owen and Madeline (Edward) MacLaughlin; siblings, Joan Hoyt, Barbara and David Wampler, and Gary and Patricia Owen.

Our family is forever grateful to the Toledo Veterans Association Clinic for the many hours of loving care they provided for Tad through Comfort Keepers. In his final weeks, indispensable care also was provided through Care360 Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with a Memorial Service immediately following at 11:30 a.m., at Boulevard Christian Church, 7041 West Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania.
