Charles “CJ” Helmick, a longtime resident of Perrysburg, passed away at 81 years old, on August 31, 2026, at the UT Medical Center. He was born in Toledo, to George and Lorna Helmick, in 1945. CJ learned hard work during summers spent at the family farm in Swanton. A 1963 graduate of Whitmer High School, he was active in gymnastics and participated in the Whitmer
Circus for three years.
Always curious, CJ and his brother, Bob, acquired amateur radio licenses and joined the Cambusters Car Club as teenagers. While attending the University of Toledo for his associate degree, he also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. His radio license and degree earned him a 40-year engineering career in design and planning with Ohio Bell and AT&T. CJ’s friends set him up on a blind date, where he met the love of his life, Kathy. They enjoyed a loving marriage for more than 56 years.
CJ is survived by his wife, Kathy; children, Heather Stahler (Gary) and Nathan Helmick (Kerstin Walz); grandchildren, Lee Stahler (Meghan) and Adam Stahler (Leah), and his brother, Robert Helmick.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Helmick, and sister, Janice Knaggs.
CJ loved spending time outdoors, staying active in scouting, playing golf, biking and kayaking. He and Kathy loved to travel (especially in multiple trips to Ireland) and cruised the world for four months in 2024. His favorite memories revolved around time and travel spent with his family and friends.
