TARTA repeating sales tax request

TARTA officials have returned to Rossford City Council again asking for support of a plan to replace property tax levies with a sales tax.

Jim Gee, CEO and general manager of the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority, explained the proposal at council’s June 25 meeting.

It would eliminate TARTA’s two current property tax levies of 2.5 mills and, instead, collect a 0.4 percent sales tax throughout Lucas County and Rossford.

The tax would total 40 cents on a $100 purchase. Currently Rossford residents are paying two TARTA property tax levies, which cost about $87 for the owner of a $100,000 home.

Before returning to the communities who are partners in public transit, TARTA underwent a strategic planning process explained in a final report, “Move Toledo,” and available at www.movetoledo.com.
