Marina guard coverage debated by council

A proposed cost-saving measure to eliminate the daytime shift of Rossford marina guards is facing resistance by the guards and Mayor Neil MacKinnon III.

Councilman Bob Densic said the marina committee discussed the issue, trying to find a way to extend guard coverage at the beginning and end of boating season, but also reduce operational costs.

The option recommended by the committee is for second and third shift (4 p.m. to 8 a.m.) coverage May 1 through October 19, with first shift coverage only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“This provides 415 shifts of coverage–a reduction of 14 shifts,” Councilman Densic explained at the February 25 Rossford City Council meeting. “And guard coverage runs from May 1 through October 19.”

Following the committee’s recommendation, City Administrator Ed Ciecka said he met with the marina guards’ union about changes to the schedule.

However, Mayor MacKinnon opposes the plan.

“I don’t think it’s a wise move to eliminate day shift the entire season throughout the week–I don’t understand it,” he said.

He noted that most boating is done during daylight hours, and guards help the city with customer service and tourism.

Councilman Densic, who keeps a boat at the marina, said many boaters during the week use the marina in the evenings after work.
