Washington Twp. police recover piece of Tommy gun from Ottawa River
Thanks to the curiosity of an local resident, Washington Township police are now in possession of an artifact that is part of the area’s infamous Prohibition-era history and may be tied to one of the most notorious gangster slayings in the Point.
Several weeks ago, a Point Place-Shoreland resident was magnet fishing on the Summit Street bridge and called police when he recovered a gun magazine with several bullets. Officer Eric Hart responded to the call and when he arrived, the resident had made another discovery.
“He said, ‘I think it’s a rifle,’” Officer Hart recalled. “And I told him, ‘That doesn’t look like any rifle I’ve ever seen.’ We really weren’t sure.”
