Task force recommends 0.5% sales tax to fund new routes and buses for TARTA
A task force report on public transportation in the Toledo area is recommending new buses, new branding and streamlined bus routes–along with a sales tax to replace the TARTA property taxes.
The Lucas County Commissioners recently released the final report from the Public Transportation Community Task Force they appointed to examine public transit in northwest Ohio.
The task force reviewed strengths, weaknesses and transportation needs of the region.
“The Toledo metro area needs an adaptable, responsive and affordable public transit system capable of meeting the needs of multiple stakeholders, including employers, workers, senior citizens, people with disabilities and recreational riders,” the report states.
They described the bus service as especially “a vital tool for low-income individuals as they build the resources needed to lift themselves from poverty.”
The task force made recommendations that include a vision for a sustainable transit system with sustainable funding.
