•WILLIAM HENRY KAHLENBERG

William Henry Kahlenberg, age 80, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019. He grew up in Pemberville, the son of Ernest and Margaret Kahlenberg, and was a graduate of Capital University in 1960. He attended Trinity Lutheran Seminary, with an internship in Denver, Colorado, graduating in 1964. Bill served many churches throughout his career, including St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dearborn, Michigan (1964-1972), Apostelkirche in Hamburg-Harburg, Germany (1972-1973), Immanuel Lutheran Church in Deshler, Ohio (1973-1975), St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beloit, Wisconsin (1975-1986), Peace Lutheran Church in Port Clinton, Ohio (1986-1994), and Saint James Lutheran Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan (1994-1995). Bill loved to travel the world, often organizing excursions to Europe, cruises to the Caribbean, and trips to the Holy Land. He especially loved visiting Germany after moving back to the States, conversing in German with anyone and everyone who would let him, and investigating his German heritage. His particular interest in genealogy made him the family historian. Bill’s other interests included the opera, organ music, his community book club and he enjoyed attending church at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Toledo, and Zoar Lutheran Church in Perrysburg.

Preceded in death by his brother John Kahlenberg, and former wife, Amy Kahlenberg. He is survived by his husband Alan Shapiro (New York), son Paul Kahlenberg (Ann Arbor - spouse Lori Johnson), daughter Ann Wildman (Evanston - spouse Steven Wildman); three grandchildren, Ethan, Owen and Megan; sisters, RuthAnn Duty (Luckey), Irene Winter (Orange Park), Alice Coy (Perrysburg) and Lois Bing (Toledo); brothers, James Kahlenberg (Brownsville) and Roger Kahlenberg (Pemberville), and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., August 9, 2019, at Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 East Indiana Avenue, Perrysburg. Family will receive guests beginning at 3 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Timothy A. Philabaum. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
