James Arthur Haas, 92, of Perrysburg, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023, at Mercy Health Perrysburg Hospital. Jim was born April 21, 1930, in Weston, Ohio, to John and June (Shumaker) Haas. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University. Jim married Helen Sherman on July 22, 1979, and they shared 43 years together.
Jim worked as a principal for the Whitehouse Elementary School from 1971 to 1982. Before that, he was a principal at Monclova and Liberty Center. After he retired, he started and was the former owner of the Lamplight Café and Bakery in Perrysburg.
He enjoyed antique cars. He liked going to his lake cottage in Indiana. The Black Swamp Car Club was where
he made a membership. His favorite hobby was remodeling his older home in Perrysburg and any other properties he owned.
He loved his church and enjoyed singing in the choir. The choir director made certain Jim could take a seat in the choir loft ahead of every service, because of his inability to walk well.
Along with his wife, Helen, Jim is survived by his children, Deanna (Doug) Montion, Nanette (Eric) Mertz and Kevin Haas; grandchildren, Danielle (Hugo) Dimas, Dylan (Muk) Mertz, Shelby Rhinehart, Michael Montion and Blaire Mertz; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Mia Dimas; sister, Dorlene “Pete,” and best friend like a brother and cousin, Skip Handy. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Suzanne Haas, and siblings, John, Robert, Jack, Betty and Jorlene.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Walker Funeral Home, Perrysburg.
